How to feel good about my job…

Dear H2

I took 7 years out of my career to raise my children, and have recently started a new job. Because I'd taken so much time out, I applied for a job at a lower level than when I left - which is OK but whenever friends ask me about it, I feel really embarrassed - especially when they've done so much more with their careers than me.

Do you have any advice about how I can feel better about what I do, and how I can make my job sound more exciting!

Thanks! R

Dear R

What a shame you don't see raising your children as an important or exciting thing to do!

Surely your friends will not be trying to compete with you... so try not to feel that you have to compete with them. We suggest that you take some time out to think about your personal and career ambitions. What is important to you in life? What do you hope to achieve? How far have you come towards achieving your goals? and What can/should you do to work towards achieving them?

In our experience, if you have a personal development plan that is geared towards fulfilling your ambitions, you can feel good about anything you're doing - as long as you can see how it fits into the grand scheme of things. Whether you are the kind of person who 'lives to work', or 'works to live', you will feel a lot more confident and proud of what you're doing if you know where it's leading you!

We wish you the best of luck in your new job, and hope that you are able to fulfill your dreams.
