Why Communication Skills Training?

Effective communication is an essential pre-requisite for success in any organisation. The ability to communicate clearly, confidently and respectfully is central to any individual’s personal effectiveness at work. Improving communication skills within an organisation can lead to better customer relations, increased confidence and motivation, fewer misunderstandings and queries, demonstrable time savings and an increase in overall efficiency and productivity.

Individuals wishing to improve their communication skills are often interested in finding ways to:

      • Enhance their confidence to communicate effectively with colleagues, managers, team members, reports, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders
      • Reduce the amount of time taken to sort out misunderstandings
      • Order their thoughts and express themselves clearly and concisely
      • Make their communication more meaningful, persuasive and compelling
      • Achieve the desired outcomes of their communication with others
Good communication is at the heart of every business relationship. It is a two-way process that not only involves the ability to express oneself clearly through verbal and non-verbal communication, but also involves skills in active listening, questioning, assertiveness and empathy. Although it is clear that some people appear to be "born communicators" the skills of effective communication can definitely be learnt, with some amazing results.

How do you give feedback without causing offence?

How to spot effective communication between two people

The people involved are...

1. In rapport - there is obvious mutual respect - they are genuine and trustworthy in what they say, even if in disagreement or conflict

2. Clear about their purpose - they know what they want from the conversation and are clear about this

3. Congruent - their body language matches their words, and is appropriate for the situation

4. Sharing the floorspace - giving an equal amount of time and opportunity for contributing to the conversation

5. Actively listening - paying full attention to each other's verbal and non-verbal communication

6. Questioning - clarifying and probing to check each other's understanding of both words and any hidden meanings

7. Summarising - recapping to ensure mutual understanding

8. Focused on a conclusion - working towards a clear outcome, including any follow-up interractions that are necessary/desired
