"Peace is not the absence of conflict but the presence of creative alternatives for responding to conflict - alternatives to passive or aggressive responses, alternatives to violence"
Dorothy Thompson

The people involved are able to...
1. Stay objective - not taking disagreements as personal attacks, and keeping the disagreement in perspective
2. Avoid game playing - not entering into competitiveness for the sake of it, or point-scoring as part of unresolved, irrelevant disagreements
3. Stay positive - focussed on aiming to reach a win/win resolution, rather than a win-lose situation where only one party wins at the expense of the other
4. Resist trying to change each other - they know this is often futile, not to mention disrespectful. Instead they focus on trying to change the situation
5. Actively listen - paying full attention to each other's verbal and non-verbal communication, clarifying, probing and summarising to check understanding
6. Focus on a conclusion - working towards a clear outcome, including any follow-up interractions that are necessary/desired
